Utahns Encouraged to Keep Taking Precautions Against Flu

May 28, 2009

The Utah Department of Health (UDOH) today reported an additional 52 cases of Novel H1N1 influenza, bringing the state total to 247 confirmed cases. Of those cases, 16 individuals have required hospitalization.

"There is evidence of ongoing transmission of this virus in Utah, and it is occurring at a time of year when we would not expect to see active transmission of influenza virus," said State Epidemiologist Dr. Robert Rolfs. "We want to encourage the public to continue to take the appropriate steps to protect themselves and limit the spread of disease."

Symptoms of the virus are similar to seasonal influenza and can include a fever of 101 or higher, headaches, body aches, extreme fatigue and possible nausea and vomiting. Most people with illness due to this virus have recovered without complications. However, some people have more serious illness; usually this has affected people with one of several underlying medical conditions, or women who are pregnant. Physicians who see patients with influenza like illness, who have one of the conditions indicating greater risk of complications, should strongly consider treating them with antiviral medications.

You can help limit the spread of disease by practicing basic good hygiene - washing your hands frequently, coughing and sneezing into your elbow, and blowing your nose into a tissue that you then discard properly. And if you or your children become ill, stay home from work and keep your children home from school, parties and other group activities.
